Encouraging Intellectual Growth and Collaboration
Each research thrust operates as a Collaborative Research Group or CRG (consisting of collaborating scientists, faculty, students and postdocs), with joint responsibility for the development of the research. The CAMCS Director, Prof. Ramesh, is an integral part of all of the research groups.
Each CRG will hold regularly scheduled meetings to review and plan research. Attendance at CRG meetings is mandatory for the graduate students and postdocs involved. Meetings may be scheduled either at Hopkins or a sponsors site, although we anticipate that the majority of the meetings will occur at Hopkins.
Postdocs funded through the Center are defined as Center postdocs and jointly advised by all core faculty in a CRG. The academic program of the graduate student is directed through the Department of the primary advisor. Staff from the sponsor or affiliate may be graduate students within these CRGs, and are expected to follow the same rules of operation.
The Center will facilitate the development of collaborative research by coordinating the visits of technical staff from the sponsor as necessary. The University is an extremely open environment, with unimpeded access to information and ideas; however, technical visits often require coordination in terms of access to facilities and people, and to ensure that the normal educational programs of the institution are not disrupted. If recommended by one or more of the faculty in the Center, temporary staff appointments may be set up as required. Visitors who use University facilities are required to undergo the safety training defined by the University, and may be required to meet other reasonable and necessary conditions as defined by normal University policy. The Center also provides a focal point for coordination of visits by Hopkins faculty and students to the sponsor's site. The objective here is to encourage the development of collaborative research, and to ensure research output, including publications, patents and presentations.
