Spinel
Our objective here is to understand the dynamic failure processes in technical ceramics using dynamic loading combined with high-speed visualization of the failure processes. We have used this approach to study AlON (aluminum oxynitride) in the past, but that material had very large grains. In this thrust, we investigate the dynamic deformations and dynamic failure of transparent spinel materials with various grain sizes down to the micron range.
We measure the dynamic mechanical response for various grain sizes, visualize the failure process and obtain deformed samples for possible later microstructural characterization. The interest is to examine failure mechanisms and plastic deformation mechanisms.
