Trimodal Science

The primary efforts in this science program are (a) developing the ability to measure the behavior of a number of tri-modal materials and (b) the development of materials models for the boundaries and interfaces within tri-modal microstructures. The experimental techniques used include Kolsky bar experiments in compression and tension, high-speed photography, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) examination of virgin, deformed and failed samples. Modeling approaches include molecular dynamics, mesoscale modeling using finite elements, and theoretical modeling using idealized material systems.
